WELCOME TO CRETE
Mikis
Theodorakis:
« When I was first in Crete,
I was surrounded by an atmosphere,
which I had never felt before.
It was close and sparkling -
a light out of this world. »
Crete is an island of surprises and contrasts. High mountains cut through by deep gorges, ancient archaeological sites alongside traditional villages where life continues in a relaxed and friendly way, clear blue seas bordered by golden sandy beaches are breathtaking. There is nothing more beautiful than swimming in the Libyan sea and looking up at the snow-capped mountains. Old stone farmhouses, monasteries and villages perched on mountain ridges, castles and chapels forgotten on steep slopes. Shores lined with forbidding rocks, often inaccessible, but also endless sandy or pebbly beaches are waiting to be discovered. Crete’s beauty lies in the contrasts of its nature, the variety of its vegetation and the wildlife in its chestnut, oak and cypress forests. Medicinal herbs and fragrant shrubs - dittany, marjoram, rosemary, sage and thyme - grow in rocky areas and offer a special taste to meals and herb teas. The mountain tops are home to the "kri-kri", the little Cretan goats.
Crete, island of history & mythology: the father of the Greek gods, Zeus, was born in a cave on Mount Ida (Psiloritis), the highest mountain on the island. He was the patron of hospitality and his spirit lives on today in the hearts of all Cretan people.
